2007 Summer Exhibit - July 7th - September 28th

Art by Joel Sager
Joel Sager - Absurdity of Existence
We are coming up on the final weeks of Perlow-Stevens Gallery's 2007 Summer Exhibit. If you have not had an opportunity to view this show, please, join us for an assortment of contemporary art ranging from the material and texturally heavy minimalist work of Wayne Leal (Columbia, Missouri) to the American Folk inspired oil pastels of Jane Chukas (Anamosa, Iowa). The exhibit will run, as each exhibit at Perlow-Stevens Gallery does, for the quarter starting July 6th through September 28th. We are extremely fortunate to be showing in this exhibit the mixed-media, minimalist paintings of Bob Maes (Denver, Colorado); the stylized, folk-inspired townscape oil pastels of Jane Chukas (Anamosa, Iowa); the voluminous ink and rice paper abstract paintings of Anne Hassel (Warrensburg, Missouri); the sometimes industrial and other times organic, minimalist, low-relief wall sculptures of Wayne Leal (Columbia, Missouri); the suggestive and eerily glaze-laden ewers of Paul Morris (Ft. Collins, Colorado); the narrative oil, tar, and collage paintings of Joel Sager (Columbia, Missouri); the vibrantly colorful and lucid glasswork of Bob Rynearson (Temple, Texas); and the color-saturated chalk pastels of Julie Hansen (Kansas City, Missouri).

Metropolitan Artist's Work Finds a Midwestern Home
by Caroline Gallay

Wayne Leal’s studio is marked by what he calls the same “crafted randomness” that characterizes his work. Bags of bark, piles of cracked clay and buckets of rusty nails litter the floor. Children’s artwork dapples the wall, displayed prominently next to Leal’s own conglomerations of doll parts and other oddities. It is hot and muggy, and the sound of buzzing insects permeates the air ...read more...
